Colombian President Warns 'I Would Take Up Arms Again' should American Forces Invades.

Donald Trump and President Gustavo Petro have turned up the rhetoric of their exchange, further raising strains between the two countries after US forces struck Venezuela to remove the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He runs cocaine mills and cocaine factories and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Growing Tensions and Claims

Talking to journalists on Sunday, the US president threatened similar use of force against Bogotá, asserting the country is “very sick too” and governed by an unwell individual who likes making the drug and trafficking it to America."

While Colombia stands as the world’s largest source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally connected to the trade.

A Frayed Relationship

This nation has long been a close partner of Washington in the struggle combating drug cartels and enjoyed cross-party backing from American politicians, yet ties have worsened markedly since Trump was elected.

Its drug trade is largely controlled by illegal armed groups including the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and dissident factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a large contingent of whom laid down arms following a 2016 peace deal.

The President's Strong Response

When asked whether military intervention similar to Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump said: "I like the sound of that to me."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who demobilised in the last century, rejected these allegations. "I am neither illegitimate and I am not a drug trafficker," he declared.

"Trump speaks without knowledge. Cease defaming me," he posted online.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will become a multitude of fighters in the mountains. And should they arrest the nation's leader, which many of the population loves and respects, they will provoke the powerful force of the populace," he admonished.

From Fighter to President

The president dedicated some years as a young man as a member of the leftist M-19 armed organization but is not believed he did not participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he participated in creating the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago and later became an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of the capital city prior to his election president.

"I swore to abstain from using arms again ... but in defense of my country I will take up arms again," he vowed.

Heightened Measures along with Cross-Political Condemnation

Colombia's defense chief stated that Petro's security detail had been reinforced.

A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have sided with Trump's stance, however, leaders from all sides of Colombian politics have rejected the possibility of an invasion targeting Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Pressure

American authorities revoked his travel authorization subsequent to he called on American soldiers to disobey any illegal orders. Later, in October, authorities imposed asset freezes on Petro, his wife and a number of associates.

At the same time the US was building up its forces in the region and bombing vessels thought to carry drugs to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US also carried out strikes on boats in Pacific waters near Colombia.
